Some examples of the illnesses or diseases that can be prevented by exercising are cardiovascular disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes. Playing volleyball on a consistent basis is one way to increase your physical activity level, which will help you get fit and toned, as well as healthy and energetic. Regular exercise also might help decrease feelings of depression and increase feelings of happiness and well-being. One of the best things about participating in volleyball practice and games is the physical exercise that athletes can get. The aspects of the game of volleyball that help promote a healthy lifestyle are a combination of endurance, muscular strength and power. Improving on these three aspects can help greatly enhance the physical well-being of the individual and he lp him or her grow up to be a strong, fit and healthy adult. Not only is this important physically, but it also holds an importance for mental and emotional well-being. Mental and emotional gain is important in the practice of volleyball. Volleyball does not need to be competed at the professional level in order to receive joy from playing. In my own experience from playing volleyball in gym class; Everyone seems to be in a good mood when playing volleyball. Everyone was able to stop thinking about the normal stress of each day and set some time aside for yourself to simply have fun. This is very beneficial for an individual. A healthy individual consists of a healthy mind and a healthy body. The mind and body must act as one in function. If you have a problem with one it may directly affect the other. My mother was diagnosed with a mental health illness. I have a very good understanding of the importance of exercise for an individuals mind and body. My mother attempted suicide when I was sixteen and I had to call emergency medical services for her transportation to a hospital. She was then admitted into the psychiatric ward. Now, five years later my mother has incorporated physical fitness into her life as treatment along with anti-depressants and different types of coping mechanisms to decrease stress. I have never been diagnosed with a mental health illness. However, I have adopted my mothers physical exercise routine. I am currently working on becoming more positive and mindful every day and I think physical exercise at least 2-3 times a week can amplify my level of happiness. I believe volleyball stands for the joy that everyone in life could use some more of. Volleyball is a fun team building sport. Volleyball can help to improve positive communication with others because it is considered ethically wrong to be negative toward others playing the game as well. Volleyball encourages you to be attentive and mindful in life. If you are not paying attention in volleyball you may lose control of possible outcomes and get hurt. In relation to life, if you are not mindful and attentive you may find yourself in situations you regret being in. In this aspect, volleyball can help you develop good decision-making skills. Volleyball also teaches you to understand authority. You must follow the rules and treat others with respect in order to complete the game correctly. This causes individuals to learn valuable life lessons that can be easily applied for personal development of a healthy lifestyle. If you treat your mind and body you are treating your spirit. Therefore, volleyball decompresses your spirit by simply allowing you to get away from your thoughts. Then, when you are finished playing volleyball you can come back to the long agenda of tasks you have to complete. However, you will come back to your agenda with mindfulness. You create an atmosphere for yourself where it is easier to think and make decisions. It is easier because you essentially clear your mind. In conclusion, volleyball has helped me significantly. I have learned to become an individual who can work with a team to accomplish tasks. I am an athletic training major; Therefore, I can directly apply my team skills to the athletic training facility when I am evaluating athletes injuries and implementing rehabilitation step wise progressions. In addition, volleyball has helped decrease my level of stress. Before performing volleyball on a weekly basis, I felt as if I was lost. I felt like I had no roots in the ground I walked on. All I could focus on was the constant stress of being an athletic training major. Volleyball taught me how to set just an hour and thirty minutes of time aside for myself two days a week in order to present myself with positive and mindful spirituality. I previously felt like I wondered through the darkness, terrified to make mistakes. Now I feel like my positive ego guides me through life helping me make critical decisions. After completing volleyball my spirit has an increased level of energy and happiness. I often feel much more relaxed when I am able to have fun and complete some level of physical exercise on a weekly basis.

What Is an Independent Variable

An independent variable is a variable that doesnt depend on another variable and isnt changed by any factors an experimenter is trying to measure. Its the variable that is controlled or changed in a scientific experiment to test its effect on the dependent variable. The independent variable is denoted by the letter x in an experiment or graph. Independent Variable Example For example, a scientist is testing the effect of light and dark on the behavior of moths by turning a light on and off. The independent variable is the amount of light and the moths reaction is the dependent variable. For another example, say you are measuring whether amount of sleep affects test scores. The hours of sleep would be the independent variable while the test scores would be dependent variable.A change in the independent variable directly causes a change in the dependent variable. If you have a hypothesis written such that youre looking at whether x affects y, the x is always the independent variable and the y is the dependent variable. Graphing the Independent Variable If the dependent and independent variables are plotted on a graph, the x-axis would be the independent variable and the y-axis would be the dependent variable. You can remember this using the DRY MIX acronym, where DRY means dependent or responsive variable is on the y-axis, while MIX means the manipulated or independent variable is on the x-axis More About Variables The independent variable is only one of the variables in an experiment. The Importance of Break Time or Playtime in Primary School

1.0 Introduction The modernized world has changed people’s perception on how they look at break time or playtime. Many people fail to give importance on break time or playtime in primary school. Thus, the duration given for playtime in primary school level has eventually reduced down the years. The NF (2014) states that ‘school breaktimes are getting shorter despite pupils and teachers recognizing them as an important opportunity for physical exercise and socializing’. Rochman (2012) mentioned that ‘playtime can be as important as class time for helping students perform their best’. Comparing two student, student A and student B, student A is allowed to have playtime while student B is restricted from playtime. Several studies show that activities carried out during playtime has a connection with learning in the classroom. For example, an article by Davis and Pollock (2012) mentioned that ‘impact of exercise on children’s cognition implies a link to academic performance. Population studies provide evidence that inactivity and excess weight are associated with poor academic achievement’. Parker (2013) stated that playtime which is made use for role play can aid in child’s literacy skills. Insufficient duration allocated for playtime can result in bad performance in academic. Pellegrini and Davis found that a student left to work on instructed task or activity wit hout any rest will tend to lose focus on the task assigned (1995). Self As A Person s Self - 1907 Words

Self is defined as, â€Å"a person’s essential being that distinguishes them from others, especially considered as the object of introspection or reflexive action†, so it is interesting that often times society seems to place boundaries and limitations on said self, deeming what the appropriate and acceptable sort of â€Å"self† is, does and has (Oxford Dictionaries). Granted, to some extent it makes sense that a person’s self would be monitored by society; up to the point that we all must exist in this world together and to the degree that we wish to feel safe and operate in a functioning society, control becomes necessary. However, in many ways, this type of social forbearance and control over who a person chooses to be can become harmful. Over†¦show more content†¦With two selves, a person must be able to come to terms with both selves in order to fully understand one’s own self. Nevertheless, this can can be a complicated and potential ly dangerous matter; destructive if done impulsively and without care, yet fulfilling if a careful balance manages to be struck. This incredibly complex dynamic between the selves, the struggle for balance between the two halves and the potential risks and payoffs of striking said balance between the two, can however, be clearly seen in the texts of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson and Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontà «. In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, it is clear that Jekyll has discovered the two halves of himself early in his life though he does not accept them until near the end of the novel. Jekyll states, â€Å"It was on the moral side, and in my own person, that I learned to recognize the thorough and primitive duality of man; I saw that, of the two natures that contended in the field of my consciousness, even if I could rightly be said to be either, it was only because I was radically both; and from an early date . . . I had learned to dwell with pleasure, as a beloved daydream, on the thought of the separation of these elements† (Stevenson 1709). Not only has Jekyll discovered both parts of himself at what he claims to be an â€Å"early date†, thus giving him timeto grapple with the inevitable

The Black Civil Rights Movement - 1873 Words

Imagine taking your time getting ready with your family for a nice evening dinner at a fancy restaurant. Upon arriving, you walk into the restaurant with your empty stomach ready to indulge in a fifty dollar steak when the hostess tells you to leave. No this is not because they don’t have enough room to seat you and your family down, in fact the restaurant was quite empty, but it’s because they don’t serve people of your own race. This type of incident was just another typical experience of an African American throughout the twentieth century, but believe it or not this kind of cruel behavior stills exists in the United States to this very day. Even after all the black civil rights movement, Blacks are continuously getting oppressed, especially by whites, of their equal rights which completely go against the most rudiments of any society’s rules and are entirely unethical. We have all heard Martin Luther King Jr.’s final line from his famous â€Å" I Have a Dream Speech,† â€Å"Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty we are free at last,† but this is not the case in today’s world. Many people believe that racist acts have been eradicated ever since Martin Luther King Jr., black rights advocate, has spoke his famous â€Å"I Have a Dream† speech, or since Jackie Robinson has been inducted to play in the Brooklyn Dodgers, a Major League Baseball team, but we have been deceived. Leonardo Da Vinci biography and life Essay Example For Students

Leonardo Da Vinci biography and life Essay The traveller passing through the ancient possessions of the house of Sforza, pauses not to admire the stately duomo, with its myriads of spires and its countless statues, albeit, it is the work of a great artist, and second only to its sister of Florence; he stops not to contemplate the gorgeous spire of St. Charles (the St. Vincent of Paul of his day), glittering with many a costly gem; he will have time to examine them when he returns; but he wends hiis way to the Convent of the Dominicans, and ou the walls of its refectory he sees, defaced by time, the original colors faded, its fair proportions and noble forms disgraced by the pencil of an ignorant artist, the remains of the great work of Leonardo da Vinci, the Last Supper. A sketch of the artist may not be out of place. Leonardo da Vinci was born in 1452; the same age which produced such a contellation of talent, Michael Angelo, Lorenzo de Medici, Gorgione, Titian, and Raphael in Italy, Albert Durer in Ger many, and Shakespeare in England; all men of the highest genius, that have left an impression that time cannot efface and who are the ornaments of the human race. Every artist, no matter what his creed or country; every philosopher, whether of the imaginative and somewhat sensual Epicurean school; or of the severer Platonic. the rigid Catholic, or the stern Puritan, worship these models and ac knowledge in them a reflection of the Divine mind and power. Precocity mark ed the youth of Leonardo, and Vasari has carefully preserved the details of his early life with the most gossiping accuracy. His father was a notary, who was en abled to indulge the boys love of art, which showed itself almost from infancy; poetry and music were born with him, and he had some idea of painting. With a view of cherishing these pre dilections Leonardo was sent to Andreas Unochio, wlho was famous as a sculptor, painter, and chaser in metal; his style was, however, somewhat hard. Shortly after the arrival of his pupil, Unochio was en gaged on a picture of the baptism of Christ, and he directed Da Vinci to paint one of the angels. The tak was admira bly executed, the richness of the coloring and beauty of the design far surpassing the rest of the picture. Vasari asserts that the master was indignant at being excelled by a mere child; but, it is cer tain, that thenceforward, Unochio threw aside his brush, and confined himself to the chisel and graver. But it was not alone in painting that the youthful artist won fame; architecture and modelling, drawing and chiselling, occupied his attention, and some master pieces produced at that early age, are still in the cabinets of the curious. Florence was not then well watered, and he sub mitted the plan of a canal, which, though not then adopted, was successfully execu ted two centuries later by a disciple of Galileo. It chanced that one of the ten ants of Piero da Vinci had found a circular slab of fig wood, which he brought to his lords son, begging him to paint some. thing thereon to decorate his cottage. Le onardo readily assented, and collecting a quantity of toads, serpents, and bats, he composed a sort of monster, with flashing eyes, that seemed as if it were endowed with life, and ready to start from the wood. Piero recognizing the value of the work, sold it for a hundred ducats to a Milanese merchant, who afterward trans ferred it to Sforza for three hundred; but like the cartoon representing a meadow, to be copied in tapestry for the King of Portugal, it has since been lost. He now accepted the invitation of Ludovico Sforza, Regent of Milan, to re side at his court and execute a colossal statue of his ancestor Francesco. He there completed the Last Supper. HIad he painted nothing but this, it would have been sufficient to have transmitted his name to posterity. This work is unparal lelled. The centre figure of the Saviour is of extreme beauty, while grouped around are the other holy twelve. By a master-stroke, and showing the painters acquaintance with Eastern manners, the salt cellar has been overturned before Judas. The table furniture and cloth are most exquisite. Tradition affirms that the prior of the monastery was most anxious to have the fresco finished, and wondered that day after day, he still saw the painter with his pencil in his hand, making so little progress, while the laborers in the garden had nearly done the spring work; and complained to the Grand Duke, that the artist was lazy, and that the decoration would never be finish ed, as two heads were still lacking-those of the Saviour and Iscariot. The over tasked brain and overwrought imagina tion of the painter refused, for a time, to labor; the entreaties of the sovereign re called him to his duty. The Struggles of Life EssayIn the Hlolkham collection, and the royal library at Paris, there are manu script essays on hydraulics, and his work on painting has been translated into all the European languages. His writing is difficult to read and decipher, as he wrote from left to right. Barry, afterward professor of paint ing in the Royal Academy at London, has left a description of the fresco, in its present condition, which will appropri ately close this article. W When I came into the Refectorio, I found a scaffold erected, which, on ascending, I saw one half of the picture covered hy n grent cloth, on examining the other part that was uncovered, I found the skin of color which composed the picture, to be all cracked into little squares, about the eighteenth part of an inch, which were, for the most part, in their edges loosened from the wall, and curling up; how ever, nothing was materially injured. I saw that the picture had been formally repaired in some few places, yet as this was not much, and the other parts were untouched, there was nothing to complain of. The wonderful truth and variety of the expressions, so well described by Vasari and Rubens, and the admirable fineness of finish and relievo, taken notice of by Armeni, were still remaining. While I was examining this part of the work, two gentlemen came upon the scaffold, and drew aside the cloth which covered the other half, which to my great horror and astonishment was re-painted; one of these men, took great pains to show the vast improvements the picture was re ceiving by these re-paintings, but the re painting and the discourse, so kindled my indignation, that I was no longer master of myself. What. sir, said I, is it possible that you do not perceive, how this painter, if I can call him paintcr, has destroyed the picture in every part, on which he has laid his stupid hands ? do you not see that this head is distorted, and out of drawing; that there is no longer significance or expression in it; that all his coloring is crude, and wants accord ? Do sir, open your eyes, and co m pare it with the other half of the picture, which he has not as yet buried under his cuwsed colors. He answered me, that this was only a dead color, and the painter was to go over it a second time. Oh, confusion, said I. So much the worse; if he has thus lost his way, while he was going over Leonardos work, what will become of him, when he has no longer any guide, and is left blind and abandoned to his own ignorance ? And, turning myself to two friars of the con vent, who stood by- Fathers, said I, this picture, and the painter of it, have suffered much by the ignorance of your order. It was whitewashed over some years ago, it has been again hurt in wash ing off the white, and now you have got a beast, who knows no more of the mat ter, than you do yourselves. There was no occasion for this covering it over with new colors, it might easily be secured in those parts that are loosening from the wall, and it will stand probably as long as your order will. The friar told me that he did net un derstand these matters, that he spoke but very little Italian, that he was Irish, and that it was by order of the Count de Fir miani, who was secretary of state, that this picture was re-painted. Indeed, then, countryman, said I, the world will be very little obliged to the Count Firmiani; it were to be wished, and it will be for the honor and interest of your convent, if you can prevail upon the Count to spare at least what is remain ing of the picture, and take down the scaf folding immediately. Three of his pictures are in the Louvre. Some in the possession of Lord Ashburton, and a small Madonna, at the seat of the Earl of Shrewsbury, at Alton Towers. The MIedusa, in the Florentine gal lery, is undoubtedly by his hand, but many of the works attributed to him, more properly belong to the most eminerjt of pupils, Truini and Melzi.

A Man For All Seaons Essays - English People, British People, Film

A Man For All Seaons Essays - English People, British People, Film A Man For All Seaons A Man For All Seasons (A man Cannot Serve Two Masters) Neither Thomas More or the Common Man are able to serve two masters In the play A Man for All Seasons by Roger Bolt, The Spanish Ambassador Chapuys says to Steward, a role played by the common man, No man can serve two masters(Bolt, 24). Within the play this statement is proven true for all the characters, especially for The Common Man and Sir Thomas More. The Common Man, shows himself time and again that he truly serves one master and that master is himself; whereas with More attempts to serve two masters. More attempt to serve King Henry of England, and God. By the end of the play it is shown that More cannot serve two masters despite all his efforts. It is apparent within the play that the Common Man is serving himself as his only master and no one else. In the play it may seem that he is not a self-serving character due to the fact that he obeys what people tell him to do, for instance in his conversations with Cromwell, and Chapuys, they ask him for knowledge about his master, Sir Thomas More. Firstly Cromwell asks him information concerning More's attitude towards the King's divorce of his wife the Queen. The Common Man replies, Sir, Sir Thomas doesn't talk about itHe doesn't talk about it to his wife, sirSir, he goes white when it's mentioned! Cromwell (hands coin): All Right.(Bolt, 23.). Later with his conversation with Chapuys he is asked about More's spirituality, Sir Thomas rises at six, sir, and prays for an hour and a halfDuring lent, sir he lived entirely on bread and waterHe goes to twice a week, sir. Parish Priest. Dominican(Bolt, 24). Chapuys then replies to the Common Man, Good, simple man. Here. (Gives coin. Going )(Bolt, 24). As you can see he does what he wants for himself and no other especially divulging information for money. The Common Man also only holds loyalty unto himself and no other. At the first sign his needs will no longer be met to his satisfaction he leaves. For when More loses his job and no longer has an income, the Common Man collects his belongings and leaves, Now, damn me isn't that them all overI nearly fell for it'Matthew, will you kindly take a cut in your wages?' 'No, Sir Thomas I will not.'(Bolt, 57). The Common Man is a very sly person, and holds nothing back when it comes to him and a job. This is evident as he acquires a position with Richard Rich, another very self- serving person by easily manipulating him. Richard Rich had no inclination to hire the Common Man; he was manipulated so well that the Common Man gets a job, Oh. Oh, I must contradict you there, sir; that's your imagination. In those days, sir, you still had your way to make. And a gentleman in that position often imagines these things. Then when he's risen to his proper level, sir, he stops thinking about itWell - I don't think you find people 'disrespectful' nowadays, do you sir?(Bolt, 61-62). Now, Sir Thomas More, through out the play tries to balance his life between God and King. More as he obeys God and King prays for his King, Dear Lord give us rest tonight, or if we must be wakeful, cheerful. Careful only for our soul's salvation. For Christ sake. Amen. And bless our lord the King.(Bolt, 8). To continue his service for both God and King, More is willing to sacrifice everything if it will allow him to serve both; There is my right arm. (A practical position.) Take your dagger and saw it from my shoulder, and I will laugh and be thankful, if by that means I can come with Your Grace with a clear conscience.(Bolt, 31). For in the play More is forced with a choice, to either continue in his service to King Henry and go against the Catholic Church or quite his job and continue in his service to the King, If the Bishops in Convocation submitted this morning, I'll take it offIt's no degradation.(Bolt, 48). In the play the Act of Supremacy

Portrayals within the media Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Portrayals within the media - Essay Example Under the above mentioned, the presentation of issues or images related with drugs should be more limited both to its content and to its time and it should be focused to the methods of the problem's resolution and to the risk related with them trying to avoid to become a kind of advertisement on their usage (Kay, 2002). Mostly the last years, the behavior of media towards the issue of drugs can be characterized as having 'two-aspects'. The first aspect is characterized from the existence of emissions and advertisements that have as a target to show that drugs are the 'killers' of the body and the mind as well as of discussions transmitted through the radio in which the experiences of people that have passed from this condition are analyzed in order to prove the danger related with the specific problem as well as the possible methods to face it when occurs in terms of reality. In this context, the portrayals of the drugs and the drug users are characterized mainly by the detailed analysis of the negative aspects of the situation as well as of its direct and indirect results on peoples' lives. On the other hand, the so-called 'lifestyle' of modern society, which is presented continuously through the media, refers mostly to the 'easy life', the 'easy money' through the 'easy dreams' and - on purpose or no - creates the need for the acquisition of a series of products and of a certain style of life which is not achievable to the majority of people. Under these terms the people are influenced that this way of life (the easy one) is the perfect situation and the ideal acquaintance. Very often people that live in such a style of life are presented as ideally happy even if it is known that they have drug addiction. In the worst situations, this use is just mentioned as an aspect of a person's life as not a really bad or negative condition and the drug usage is indirectly presented as the normal consequence (even a requirement') of this way of life. Greene and Krcmar (2005, 71, 72) made a research on the influence of media to the human behavior. They found that 'argumentativeness is positively related to violent movie exposure, real crime television exposure and violent television exposure'. Moreover, they stated that 'argumentativeness and verbal aggressiveness' have been found to be 'better predictors of violent media exposure than they are of violent media linking'. Furthermore, 'violent movie exposure was found to be positively related to risk taking, whereas horror movie viewing was negatively related to risk taking'. Their research did not refer specifically to the drugs and the drug users. However, their influence to the human behavior could be analogous if considering that in real terms the drug use is a 'violation of health' especially when considering the results and to that point the effects of images of such a content could have the same effect to the human behavior as the movies that contain violence. To the above direction Gutwill and Hollander (2002, 263) examined the issue of the interaction between the human behavio

Liberty and the Pursuit of the Tuth Essay Example for Free

Liberty and the Pursuit of the Tuth Essay Liberty and the Pursuit of the Truth In my essay I’ll direct my efforts to write about the thing that holds the American society together which is their values. Values are very important because all our actions based on them. I’ll address the importance of liberty and the pursuit of the truth. Liberty is defined as equality, state of being free or having freedom of choice. Sometimes our freedom can be limited because of the government policies. We shouldn’t just follow whatever the government addresses without thinking deeply about our options because sometimes they can lead us to a dead-end road. We should follow our instincts, and essence. Government responsibility to provide our needs and protect our right but sometimes that is not the case, they might direct us to the wrong way â€Å"They think that, if that they should resist, the remedy would be worse than the evil. But it’s the fault of the government itself that the remedy is worse than evil† Henry David Thoreau, Civil Disobedience. Liberty gives us the freedom to say no that what make it very important. Around 1962 our society suffered from a dysfunction because of the unequal rights caused by the segregation between black and white and the lack of liberation. Martin Luther King Jr. peaceful stood up for liberty and equal civil rights. He had a dream that blacks and whites could sit on the table of the brotherhood and that will give all of us a quality life â€Å"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed† Martin Luther King Jr. , I have a dream. Because of liberty now our society rose up and gave everyone equal rights. The fidelity meaning is based on fact or reality as you can experiences the same result constantly. Scientists did a lot of discoveries that were true because they stood for all of the challenges but they still didn’t accomplished the complete truth, as Adler Mortimer mentioned in the Pursuit of the Truth about scientist and mathematician experiments that these are matters of a taste rather than of the truth. Life is evolving and people looking for the complete truth and if we found the complete truth there is no point of life. We don’t have a reason to get up every morning to go to work, read, and explore. We will never reach the complete truth so life can evolves. Life will continue because we all have a goal to know the complete truth, and we will not accomplish that â€Å"the complete realization of the ideal that is the goal –the whole truth and nothing but the truth—will never be achieved in any stretch of time† Adler Mortimer, Pursuit of the Truth. The pursuit of truth give us a motivation to survive. The pursuit of the truth leads us to a realization of the differences between the native home and being immigrant or slave. People realized the true meaning of their homes. Even though you might be poor but at least you will not be segregated â€Å"The Scotch and the Irish might have lived in their own country perhaps as poor, but enjoying more civil advantages† Hector St. Jean de Crevecoeur What is an American. Liberty and the pursuit of the truth brought our society to a great position of equality and motivation to keep looking for more in life. They are very important in order for us to live a fair life and have a functioning society for now and the next generations.
